There can be no greater praise. Midnight Marauders sounds as fresh today as it did on the day it was released: the mark of a true classic. An incredible achievement, especially knowing they did the same thing on their preceding album, making it two perfect albums in a row.
Innovative and hugely influential — this cooperation between De La Soul and producer Prince Paul is truly a landmark album in Hip Hop and music in general. This album introduced the skit to Hip Hop albums; and although skits more often irritate than add value, on this album they work. De La Soul more or less invented the rap-skit and they remain one of the very few acts who know how to use it although on some of their later albums they misfired sometimes on the skits front.
The whole album is consistent and all the songs are awesome — no filler tracks here. Clever wordplay, deft rhymes, playful production, positivity, and fun: 3 Feet High And Rising represented a new direction for Hip Hop, clearly a reaction to cliches already emerging in Hip Hop, even in its early years. The Low End Theory is the definitive statement about what creativity, innovation, artistry, fun, and raw talent can produce. Building on the quality work of their debut, Tribe perfected the fusion of jazzy influences and bass-heavy Hip Hop beats.
The album is so coherent and consistent, it almost feels like one long song — in this case, a good thing. Phife, who only played a small part on the first album, really increased his skills as an emcee and establishes a perfect interplay with the exceptional-as-always Q-Tip. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders Almost a toss-up for the number one and two spots on this list, that is how good this album is.
That album, The Fabulous Chi-Ali , was released in when he was He then served a prison term from which he was released in By , Native Tongues seemed to be drifting apart, as the founding members each released an album representing different attitudes toward the collective. But a slightly younger generation took up the Native Tongues mantle heading into the new millennium. The crew inspired similarly minded artists across the country, including Chicago native Lonnie Rashid Lynn, a.
Common was only loosely associated with Native Tongues at the time, but closely affiliated with their themes and positive energy. Though Common has had the most continued success of the late Native Tongues, another artist from the Midwest with a crucial role in the Soulquarians has had a substantial effect on contemporary music and greater success in growing and evolving the Native Tongues sound.
Though Mos Def had planned on releasing his debut with the guidance of De La Soul, his chemistry with a similarly minded artist named Talib Kweli led the solo release to be put on hold in favor of a collaboration under the name Black Star.
Miscellany Some of the specifics of the Native Tongues membership have been disputed over the years—in particular, the status of later affiliates like Common, Mos Def, and J Dilla. Jamaican and Trinidadian trio Da Bush Babees released two mildly successful albums featuring production from Ali Shaheed Muhammad, The Ummah, and Posdnous, but the trio is likely most notable for including several early verses from Mos Def on its album Gravity.
Some artists maintained the musical innovation of the earlier Tongues records, but lacked the idealism. An account of every single artist even loosely affiliated with a member of the crew would increase this list exponentially. The worst of these songs thankfully never made it to an official release.
