To learn more about traverse curtain rods, see What curtains to use with a traverse rod? However, keep in mind that if the door is frequently used, moving that many panels aside will quickly become cumbersome. Once you know the number of panels you prefer, you just have one more question to ask yourself. How full do you like your curtains to look?
You can cover the door exactly, or you can use a curtain panel that is two or three times the size you need. This gives a much plusher look to the drapes; however, it can also be a pain to deal with the extra material. Again, if this is a functional doorway that opens and closes all day long, keeping it simple tends to have better results.
First, measure the height of the door. If the curtain rod is already installed, measure the drop height. This is the distance between the floor and where the curtains will hang from the rod, or from clips below the rod, depending on the style. If a rod is not installed, then add 4 inches this leaves room to put the rod at the proper height.
Chances are, for a standard door, the height is 80 inches or 84 inches, adding space for the rod. Now measure the width of the door. Standard sliding doors are either five or six feet wide most often six feet. This translates into a width of either 60 inches five feet or, more commonly, 72 inches.
Add four inches to each side this leaves a bit of overhang so that the curtain can be pushed back from the doorway. This makes your width 80 inches for a six-foot door. Finally, just use this simple formula: width divided by panel numbers. Then, multiply that answer by the desired fullness 1 for regular drapes, 2 or even 3 for drapes that pleat heavily when pushed back.
Maybe your sliding glass door is on the smaller side at only five feet wide. That's why the draperies in that room are sheers. Window coverings for an apartment patio door Q. Thank you everyone! However, if I DON'T do this, it may look awkward having a long curtain rod going across the whole wall with curtains only at the edge Also, I forgot to mention that we have lofted ceilings in this room, and this particular wall is a good 9' high.
Guess I'll need super long curtains! I really appreciate all of your input and I'll post a picture when we put it all together! Window covering for my ktichen patio door Q. Curtains for patio doors usually draw to one side or the other on a patio door traverse rod. A plain rod with rings would work, too. No need to draw to the fridge side. Isn't the Provia Endure a vinyl door? Are you comparing it to Andersen's PermaShield door? The PS line is a wooden door core encased completely in vinyl so it tends to be more solid than an actual vinyl unit.
They also have the Narroline Series with a real wood interior. You can get a fully vinyl unit from Andersen in their Silverline series if you wish, and it would much cheaper. In between, they have the Series glider, which is a Fibrex door with the same efficient glass available across Andersen's product lines. But I don't know enough about Provia's Endure line to say that's not a good option too. CJ Original Author. Like Save. I just open and close by hand. No wand. They have grommets at the top.
The rest of my windows have plantation shutters, which I love. To put shutters on the slider would mean that half the door would always be obscured. I open the curtain during the day and only close it when it gets dark.
They didn't cost much, so I'm fine with that part! Like 1 Save. Thank you, I appreciate your help. I wonder why they don't make more patio door curtains.
Sharon 4 years ago. I used 2 " panels from Overstock for our very large patio door. It has worked out very well and helps with temperature during winter and summer. The problem I could see with that is of you need the center support.
Our drapes are heavy thermal drapes so we had to have a strong rod and center support. If your drapes are light and gauzy maybe you'd be alright without it. We don't use a wand and just slide the panels that have grommets. I hope you find something that you're happy with. Be sure to post when you do. Related Stories.
